Duties & Responsibilities

  • Direct the activities of the Language Center in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences;
  • Advise language faculty members on the availability of instructional resources available in the commercial, non-commercial, and academic marketplace;
  • Advise language faculty members on utilizing the Language Center and on the availability of Center materials related to teaching languages;
  • Coordinate, in junction with directors of language programs, the Language Center’s support of course curriculum;
  • Maintain knowledge of the most recent theories in language acquisition;
  • Hire, train, and manage the student staff and interview, manage, and recommend for hire professional staff of the Language Center;
  • Ensure that all Language Center services, including technology, are highly reliable;
  • Maintain the Center’s adherence to copyright guidelines;
  • Consult with language faculty regarding their course needs that can be supported by the Language Center;
  • Facilitate on-site technology-based class activities (e.g., Teletandem);
  • Schedule and oversee language verification exams;
  • Oversee the strategy and direction of the language center to ensure its alignment with the institution's curriculum;
  • Manage the Language Center’s budget and create annual budget proposals;
  • Plan language-related events in the Language Center;
  • Develop and conduct in-service training workshops;
  • Collaborate with HUIT in maintaining IT resources for language courses.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field;
  • At least two years' experience in foreign language instruction;
  • At least intermediate fluency in a second language.

Additional Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in a related field;
  • Three or more years of experience in managing a language center or equivalent management experience in a similar/equivalent environment;
  • Working knowledge of technologies and teaching methodologies used in language teaching and learning;
  • Experience in teaching a language and on the use of language-related instructional materials;
  • Advanced IT skills are highly desirable;
  • Knowledge of web site development and maintenance are highly desirable.

The possibility of the option to teach one language course in the future is under consideration.
