LANGUAGE RESOURCE CENTER DIRECTOR

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

The LRC Director is responsible for promoting and resourcing the study and teaching of language and culture through the Language Resource Center at Wheaton College. The director will oversee daily operations of the LRC and will apprise and resource language faculty on developments in language pedagogy and foreign language instructional technology and assessment. The director will also oversee all language testing efforts, maintain and develop the department website, and create promotional materials for the department. The LRC Director will report to the MCL chair and/or assistant chair and will work collaboratively with the MCL Senior Office Coordinator.

 

This is a full-time position at 40 hours per week/10 months per year, plus 20 hours per week/2 months per year.

 

DUTIES

1. Promote learning of modern and classical languages and culture at Wheaton College through constant improvement of the Language Resource Center, coordinating its space, equipment, staff, and programs. Oversee daily operations of the LRC, including its media holdings, equipment, scheduling, and the physical learning environment. Train, and supervise LRC student employees and conversation aides.

 

2. Teach 1 to 2 courses per year in a modern language or related field. Willingness to supervise student teachers, as needed.

 

3. Maintain currency with ACTFL and/or IALLT through conference attendance and participation in order to stay abreast of recent trends in language pedagogy and technology.

 

4. Advise and collaborate with faculty to develop curricular and assessment materials that reflect ongoing developments in language technology and pedagogy.

 

 5. Administer all aspects of the Department’s language testing program: test selection, student registration, test scoring, and database management. Research new testing options and update faculty on developments in language testing (placement, competency, formative and exit assessments).

 

6. Develop and keep current a list of resources for students who want to learn languages not taught at Wheaton.

 

7. Coordinate departmental external relations efforts with Senior Office Coordinator and Marketing/Communications department, including the creation of marketing and promotional materials for all language sections; maintenance and development of departmental websites and social media platforms; maintaining communications and coordinating with alumni in consultation with Chair(s) and Language Section Coordinators.

 

8. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Master’s Degree in Chinese, French, German, Spanish, Second Language Acquisition, Educational Technology, Foreign Language Education, or equivalent.
  2. Advanced proficiency in a language other than English. 
  3. Experience teaching a modern language, preferably at the post-secondary level, including curriculum design. 
  4. Expertise in language learning and testing technology.
  5. Familiarity with learning management systems, Microsoft Office, and web design software.
