Hi, Trish:

If you’re purchasing cameras, the Theta V is a good choice.  Reasonably priced, good output.  A couple of thoughts on headsets: it makes some sense to go with an untethered headset, particularly if you’re planning a set of group experiences.  We’ve used the Oculus Go, and are exploring the Oculus Quest.  One other possibility to consider is a VR theater setup in which you can synch playback across a number of headsets, and manage them.  My colleagues here have used WondaVR with good results to develop and play back 360 video with hotspots, annotations, and quizzing – I’ll have to check with our team at the Visualization Lab to verify whether they used WondaVR to manage the UX in the class I saw.  This was an activity in which a group of students were immersed in a sequence of three 360 videos sourced from a Facebook user, shot at some of the Yellow Vest demonstrations in Paris.  We were moving through the crowd, marching along with the demonstrators, etc.  Once the sequences were over, the students surfaced into a Zoom chat with two young protestors from the movement, to hear more about it and discuss.

My $0.02?  Synchronized group immersion is going to be pedagogically impactful (ugh …) in transformative ways, and may not require the same per-unit cost as high-end experiences that aren’t as replicable or integratable into the classroom experience.   Happy to discuss more.

Subject: [LLTI] Virtual Reality Equipment

HI everyone!

I seem to have an excess of budget this year, and I’m investigating headsets, goggles and cameras for VR activities.  For those of you who have worked in this area, do you have any equipment recommendations?

Thanks!

Trish
