Job Description:

The Assistant Director of Technology at Brown University’s Language Resource Center (LRC) will play a lead role in collaborations around instructional design and innovative uses of technology in language teaching and learning.  The Assistant Director will:

  • work closely with colleagues in instructional technology and at the library to provide resources, professional development, training opportunities and services to language faculty, graduate and undergraduate students.
  • work closely with undergraduates on event programming for the enhancement of language learning. 
  • oversee operations of the Language Resource Center (LRC), a campus hub for language teaching and learning, including day-to-day operations of the LRC classroom, office, and open space.
  • strengthen the mission of the Center for Language Studies (CLS) to promote excellence in language teaching and learning within the CLS and across multiple departments. 
  • this position may be able to teach a section of a foreign language beginning or intermediate course, depending on qualifications and enrollments

Note:  This is a 10-month full-time position.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree with at least 5 years or more of experience in foreign language technologies, multimedia and web technology, placement testing and with multilingual computing issues, or equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • An advanced Degree (M.A. or higher) preferably in instructional design, educational technology, or second language acquisition; is preferred.
  • Experience in foreign language technologies, multimedia and web technology, placement testing and with multilingual computing issues.
  • Expertise to design and lead workshops with and for language faculty and graduate students on innovative ways to integrate technology into language teaching.
  • Ability to coordinate and arrange with academic coordinator student workers to lead tutoring hours and undergraduate programming.
  • Technical requirements preferred include:  Expertise and experience in implementing and/or supporting curricular or classroom-oriented technologies, such as learning management systems (Canvas), web conferencing (Zoom, Cisco, AdobeConnect), distance learning, video/audio editing software (Audacity, iMovie, AdobeSpark, Audition, Premiere, Camtasia), blogs, discussion tools, digital storytelling, web conferencing (Zoom, Cisco), Panopto, digitization of materials, subtitling, podcasts, online language placement testing.
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal, managerial, administrative and organizational skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability in project management.
  • Experience in some aspect of online teaching preferred.
  • Experience in researching and willingness to stay informed of new technologies.
  • Proficiency in one or more languages besides English preferred.
  • Experience in teaching or learning a foreign language in a classroom setting preferred.
